"Consider it!": Let's meet an Emergency Medical Responder in Carmacks

If you want to help people and gain experience to begin a career in health care, consider joining the Yukon’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team.

The Government of Yukon employs Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) in part-time, on-call roles.

There are currently 130 active Responders in 15 communities outside of Whitehorse.

During an EMR’s on-call shift, they carry a radio. They have the freedom to pursue other work and activities. When called out, pay increases to a standard hourly rate.

For some people, EMR work is a path into a new career as they go on to certify as Primary Care Paramedics and achieve permanent employment.

Let's meet Nathalie who works in Carmacks.

Could you introduce yourself, and tell us about what you do in Carmacks?

My name is Nathalie; EMS crew since December. And I also work at the community library and the school library.

What do you like about working as Emergency Medical Responder?
When it was proposed that I join EMS it was an opportunity for me. A new opportunity and a career switch. It’s like the Canadian dream to switch careers and that’s what this was for me.

When it comes to working for the community, I like being involved and giving my appreciation to people who welcomed me in the in the community.

I just love it!

What would you say to somebody maybe considering taking on a role like this?

I would just encourage everybody to meet them and consider joining the EMS.  We can use our time.
It's the time we want to give and can give. So yes – consider it!

What kind of medical formation did you have?
The EMS gave us all our training when I started. The EMS and my supervisor gave training to the new crew.

What do you like about living in Carmacks?
It's a small community and we are close to each other. And that’s what I like.
