"A good path to go": Let's meet a travelling licensed practical nurse in the Yukon

Nursing in the Yukon can bring your career to many places. That includes the opportunity to travel and work in temporary roles with opportunity to specialize and develop.

Today let’s meet Ukwuoma who is a licensed practical nurse (LPN) with the Government of Yukon.

In her work she has practiced both in Whitehorse and Dawson City, working in continuing care.

Let’s learn about Ukwuoma’s role and what she enjoys about nursing in the Yukon.

Could you tell us about your work in the Yukon? What do you do?
I am an LPN. I work mainly at the rehab units at the Thompson Center in Whitehorse. There I help people with broken bones or hips. We try to get them back on their feet and get them back home as safely as possible.

We're meeting in Dawson today at Alexander McDonald Lodge. What brings you here?
Sometimes I come out to Dawson City to help so that the nurses here can go on vacation and take some breaks. I cover for them while they’re on breaks.

What do you like about your work?
I like the ability to move around. I like the flexibility. In this role I get to meet people and different personalities. And help people as well. I'm always happy when (clients) can go home and achieve their goals while they're here.

When did you decide you wanted to go into nursing?
Well, growing up, actually, I've always wanted to be a doctor. This is still a stepping stone for me. So this is a step towards achieving that goal.

"If you have the passion of helping people, then it's a good path to go," says Ukwuoma of nursing in the Yukon.

What would you say about the team here in Dawson?
Oh, it's been great. I enjoy it every time I come here. It’s like a family here. Everyone interacts with each other and we have activities outside the lodge.
So it's not just work. You also get to meet outside and have fun. It's more like a family community than just a working community.

What advice might you have for a young person who is considering a career in health care in the Yukon?
I think you have to have the passion for nursing, before taking that step. If you go in and you don't have the passion, you might not last long or enjoy the job. But if you have the passion of helping people, then it's a good path to go.
