Meet Alyssa Magun, home support worker
Can you introduce yourself and what you do in Watson Lake?

My name is Alyssa, and I’m a home support worker for the Government of Yukon. I’ve been living in Watson Lake for over 30 years, and I have 5 kids and 3 grandkids!

What does a typical visit look like when you meet with an Elder or senior in their home?

It all depends on their care plan. Some visits involve safety cleaning—things like mopping floors or scrubbing bathrooms, which can be tough for Elders who can’t bend over for long periods. I also help with meal prep, making sure they have food ready in the freezer.

Even small tasks, like changing a fitted sheet, make a difference. Many of our seniors don’t have the hand strength to pull a sheet onto the bed, and that’s where I step in. It’s about helping with the simple things we often take for granted but can be real struggles for them.

What makes for a great day at work?

For many of our seniors, I might be the only visitor they see that day, so they get really excited when I arrive! They just want to talk and share stories. I always take 10 minutes at the start of my visit to sit down and let them chat before I begin cleaning. Sometimes, we end up having an hour-long conversation! The social aspect of my job is just as important as the physical care I provide.

Here in Watson Lake, our seniors want to stay close to family and friends, and I love that I can help make that possible. The longer they can stay in their homes, the happier and healthier they are.

What would you say to someone considering this type of work?

You need strong people skills—you have to be comfortable engaging with others and building trust. And you can’t be shy! Some of our work involves helping with personal care, like showers and dressing, so you need to be confident and make your clients feel comfortable and safe.

This job is incredibly rewarding because you know you’re truly making a difference. Our goal is to help Elders and seniors live independently and happily for as long as possible. They love their independence, and we help them keep it.
