"Little teeth are a big deal!" Let's meet a dental hygienist with the Yukon Children's Dental Program

In the Yukon many schools have a dentistry clinic. The Yukon Children's Dental Program is a great way to reach children early.

Let's meet Ruby who is a dental hygienist based in Whitehorse.

"One of my favorite things about my job is seeing the kids from kindergarten and watching their confidence progress as the year goes on," she says.

Could you introduce yourself and what you do?
My name is Ruby, and I am a registered dental hygienist. I work with the Yukon Children's Dental Program.

I travel across the entire Yukon offering dental services to to families. 

We are currently at Selkirk Elementary School in Whitehorse and we are working out of the clinic that is at the school.

What do you do in a typical day with the young people?
A typical day for me is coming into work, getting the clinic set up for the day and then checking my list of kids from the school that need to be seen, and going
and getting them from their classroom and providing dental care.

The Yukon Children's Dental Program is all about meeting children early and helping to foster good habits to last a lifetime.

What do you like about your job?
One of my favorite things about my job is seeing the kids from kindergarten and watching their confidence progress as the year goes on, and having them being very excited to come and see us at the dental room.

How long have you worked here?
I have been working with the Yukon Children's Dental program for a year and a half.

How did people make you feel welcome when you started?
I was welcomed into this program with open arms. I was very supported by both HR as well as my, program itself. Everybody was very welcoming and supportive and it made for a very easy transition.

What would you say to someone considering a career with the Government of Yukon?
I think working with the government of Yukon is a great experience. I've actually been trying to convince a lot of my friends who also work in health care to come up here, because it's just such a great opportunity.
