What we do:
- Provide comprehensive oral health care services to preschool and school-aged children in schools and clinic settings, both in Whitehorse and the Yukon’s rural and remote communities;
- deliver diagnostic, restorative, preventative and surgical dental procedures prescribed by the program dentist; and
- liaise with communities and schools and members of the health care team to determine dental requirements and priorities.
Job description:
- Provides comprehensive oral health care services for preschool, school children and residents throughout Yukon to improve the oral health status of Yukon residents by:
o managing assigned school dental clinics;
o determining the scope of work to be accomplished in clinics, discussing dental requirements in communities/schools with community health stakeholders;
o taking medical histories, organize dental examinations and performing recall examinations;
o diagnosing dental caries and abscesses, and identifying anomalies through taking and interpreting dental radiographs;
o developing treatment plans and present them to parents/guardians to discuss appropriate treatment and options. Liaising and consulting with dentists and other health care professionals;
o administering local anesthetic, performing clinical dental treatments including uncomplicated extractions, placing sutures, preparing cavities, placing restorations using silver amalgam and composite resin, applying sealant, finishing dental restorations, scaling and polishing teeth, placing stainless steel crowns, applying topical fluoride and other related procedures;
o providing emergency diagnosis and treatment to relieve pain;
o providing periodontal services;
o ensuring patients and guardians are aware of any post-surgical instructions, additional care or treatments and referrals;
o maintaining dental records;
o following universal infection control precautions and disposing of dental waste to ensure the safety of staff and patients; and
o ensuring confidentiality is strictly maintained. - plans, coordinates and organizes field dental clinics and equipment for rural and remote Yukon communities;
- develops and delivers a dental health education program in Yukon schools to promote the importance of good dental hygiene and oral health care habits; and
- delivers a detailed preventative dental health program to reduce the incidence of dental decay and promote good dental hygiene.

Job requirements:
- Holds a Dental Therapist Certificate issued by a regulatory authority in Yukon, or another Canadian jurisdiction; and is in good standing with the regulatory authority that issued the certificate;
- experience providing and delivering comprehensive dental treatment and preventative services to school-aged children;
- experience working to the full scope of a dental therapist’s practice, including extractions, pulpotomies and crown placement;
- experience working in public health and/or with First Nation’s communities is considered an asset;
- vulnerable sector RCMP security clearance;
- valid Class 5 Yukon driver’s license;
- CPR certificate, to be obtained within 6 months of hire;
- transportation of dangerous goods certificate, to be obtained within 6 months of hire; and
- WHMIS, to be obtained within 1 month of hire.
