What we do

Nursing home attendants (NHA) provide person-centered care in a home-like environment, while respecting residents’ individuality.
NHAs work as part of the multi-disciplinary care team guided by the philosophy of care, policies, procedures, guidelines and standards of practice to ensure that residents feel a sense of belonging and receive best-practice care.

Job description:
  • Assists residents/clients with activities of daily living while respecting and promoting individual choice and lifestyle and the feeling of home and belonging; 
  • develops therapeutic relationships with residents/clients, and communicates with residents with cognitive, mental and physical health conditions using skills learned through coursework and mentoring, to provide a safe environment; 
  • observes and reports acute, chronic, behavioural and palliative changes of residents/clients while also administering medication and treatment under the direction of registered staff; 
  • contributes to the development and wellbeing of the health care team. Develops harmonious relationships within care teams and across all programs and departments;
  • provides leadership by demonstrating tasks to colleagues, training other employees in work procedures, establishing daily work priorities and schedules, participating with the program manager or the registered nurse supervisor in personal performance plan and providing ongoing feedback; 
  • documents on medication administration records, residents charts, daily flow sheets and communication records. Reports important changes to the team leader and participates in care conferences and daily interactions to develop and implement care plans. Provides interventions according to the care plan and evidence based practice;
  • manages conflicts with residents, visitors and family while ensuring residents rights of privacy, confidentiality, autonomy and individuality are protected; and 
  • provides laundry, bed making, housekeeping and janitorial services, as well as meal serving and cleanup.

  • Extensive orientation related to our philosophy of care and evidence-based policies, as well as regular educational opportunities to maintain clinical skills and best practice;

Job requirements:
  • Certificate as a health care aide (HCA), personal support worker (PSW), continuing care assistant (CCA) or personal care aide (PCA) from a recognized Canadian educational institute; 
  • recently applied knowledge of HCA theory, practices and techniques; 
  • recent experience charting and documenting in progress notes; 
  • TB screening; 
  • vulnerable sector RCMP security clearance; 
  • Food Safe level 1 (completed within the last 2 years); and
  • WHMIS 2015.
