The structure of the Yukon’s public school system

The Yukon’s public school system is overseen by the Minister of Education in accordance with the Education Act. There are three school authorities:

  • Yukon Education, the Department of Education’s school authority, which operates 18 schools in communities across the Yukon.
  • The Commission scolaire francophone du Yukon, which manages two French First Language schools and two school programs.
  • The Yukon First Nation School Board, which oversees 11 schools across the territory.

The Yukon’s school system offers several French language programs. Catholic school programs are offered in three Whitehorse-based public schools.

Job overview

Educational assistants work in a variety of different areas within the Yukon’s education system. Most work in classrooms with children who need support, but educational assistants also work on buses, for the student support services branch in specialized areas such as occupational therapy, speech, language and social skills, deaf and hard of hearing and visually impaired supports and in other locations such as the Teen Parent Centre or the Individual Learning Centre.

Professional development
  • The Department of Education is in the process of developing a comprehensive Yukon-specific training program for education assistants.
  • Funding is also available for education assistants to receive training in subject areas specific to the children that they support.
Recruiting process
  1. Resume submission – submit your resume to the job you wish to apply for, clearly demonstrating in your resume how you meet the required qualifications and experience.
  2. Resume screening – all resumes are reviewed and screened by human resources and the school administrator. Candidates are notified of their status in approximately one week after a job posting is closed.
  3. Interviews – candidates who are screened in will be contacted for interviews.
  4. Offer of employment – the successful candidate(s) will be contacted and issued a verbal offer of employment followed by a written offer. 
  5. Submission of credentials – once an offer of employment is accepted we will ask for the documentation and credentials required to determine salary and ensure conditions of employment are met.
Job requirements

Education assistants are required to have:

  • grade 12 graduation or equivalent;
  • experience working with youth; and
  • relevant experience related to the specified job assignment can be considered assets, for example
    o    experience with trauma informed education practices,
    o    experience with restorative justice in a classroom setting
    o    post-secondary training in exceptionalities worker program, special education, teacher education, early childhood education, social services or medical services
